I think it’s wonderful that a black woman was cast as Hermione. I agree with most that her race was not specified in the books so it is open to interpretation. What irritates me is when people who assert that Hermione was not necessarily white claim that Emma Watson’s casting in the movies 15 years ago was whitewashing. If Hermione’s race was not specified in the books Hermione could be black, Asian, Indian, native, Latina, or white. Hermione’s casting in the movies was not white washing anymore than Norma Dumezweni’s casting in the play was race bending. They are both different interpretations of the same character and should be regarded by the fandom as equal. Hermione’s casting should be regarded as a triumph for all who strive for equality not an opportunity to bash someone who dedicated her childhood to the films and continues to do her best to bring equality to all women.
